The firm also bagged a £50m-plus project for a major programme to upgrade Marne Barracks in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

The barracks, which is currently the home of 5 Regiment Royal Artillery and 32 Regiment Royal Engineers, requires additional infrastructure to prepare for the arrival of 21 Regiment Royal Engineers by 2027.

Chinese contractor BCEGI ranked second as the expected contractor to build the new Chinese Embassy in London which was resubmitted for planning after being turned down two years ago.

If the application is approved BCEGI will transform the old Royal Mint site in the City of London in to one of China’s largest worldwide embassies.

John Sisk came in third place after beating Mace and ISG to land the £150m fit-out deal on an office and life sciences centre opposite King’s Cross station in London for global healthcare giant MSD.

A strong month of order taking also strengthened Morgan Sindall’s lead in the rolling 12-months rankings for work won.

According to data compiled by Barbour ABI, the contractor is now £700m ahead of its nearest rival Kier with an estimated tally of £2.5bn for the year.

Overall August proved a quiet month for the most successful  50 contractors with total orders taken valued at around £2.4bn, compared to £3.1bn in July.

Among the other big wins in the month ISG picked up an estimated £100m project at Ford Open Prison in West Sussex to deliver a seven three storey house blocks and a healthcare centre.

Galliford Try picked up a £70m project to reopen Campsfield House immigration removal centre in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

The project will see the construction of a 400-bedroom immigration removal centre for men which forms part of the Government’s plan to expand the detention estate by a third.

Newcombe House overhaul plan

JRL picked up two jobs, worth together £120m for to transform a 12-storey office building called Newcombe House in Notting Hill Gate for Beltane Asset Management and the other a later living retirement scheme comprising 260 flats in Brighton.
