St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos. has completed construction of the $650 million Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital campus, according to a March 31 news release. The structure is the builder’s ninth completed hospital project in the greater Houston area.
The 570,000-square-foot, seven-story hospital encompasses 100 licensed beds, nine operating rooms and nine imaging modalities, according to the news release. The campus also includes an emergency department, critical care unit and a birthing center.
McCarthy began work in February 2022 with the demolition of 11 existing buildings on the site, previously occupied by Sysco Corp., per the release.
McCarthy was engaged early by Houston Methodist, which allowed the firm to work with Washington, D.C.-based architect Page Southerland Page and the rest of the design team to begin work before design completion. As a result, McCarthy delivered each of the campus buildings earlier than scheduled, according to the firm.
During the design and construction process, the team used BIM and advanced MEP systems, per the release, alongside prefabrication, LIDAR scanning and 3D modeling to improve efficiency.
The campus also includes two six-story medical office buildings totaling 320,000 square feet, per the release.
Medical Office Building One contains a dedicated cancer center with a breast care center, infusion center and pharmacy area, along with a bridge connector to the hospital tower. Medical Office Building Two initially focuses on sports medicine, orthopedics and physical therapy services.
Both buildings opened to the public approximately 12 months prior to the completion of the hospital project.
