AUSTIN, Texas, April 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Billd, the leading provider of financial solutions for commercial subcontractors, today released its 2025 National Subcontractor Market Report, the fifth annual analysis of the industry’s landscape. The report, which aggregates insights from over 800 commercial construction professionals, uncovers a critical link between strategic capital management and breakthrough business performance.
Challenges like slow, unpredictable pay and the resulting cash flow instability continue to plague the industry—yet the burden of solving these problems consistently falls on subcontractors. The report, based on survey responses from subcontractors, general contractors, and suppliers, found that many GCs remain unaware of the issue’s severity despite it directly affecting their projects, estimating payment delays at 30 days versus the actual average of 56.
Despite these challenges, the 2025 report reveals a powerful insight: Subcontractors with a proactive capital strategy who account for the cost of working capital in their bids are outperforming peers by 41%. These companies not only report higher profitability and revenue—they also win more bids.
The report, which compared responses across subcontractors of all sizes, also highlights the limits of traditional financing in construction and the pressure they put on business owners. Seventy-one percent worry about cash flow, and 30% tap into personal savings when short on cash. Alarmingly, 40% of subcontractors retain half to all of their profits in the business to fund operations—limiting reinvestment in growth.
“The data is clear—there’s a fundamental flaw in how money moves through construction,” said Chris Doyle, founder and CEO of Billd. “This report confirms what we’ve said all along: A proactive, diversified capital strategy is the only way for subcontractors to free up profits and invest in growth,” Doyle said. “Subs who lead with this strategy will lead the industry.”
