McAleer & Rushe starts £90m Birmingham student rooms job

Work has just started on the Selly Oak site, which was formerly home to a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The scheme will deliver 472 studios and 364 cluster bedrooms across two blocks, along with a new medical centre and landscaped public areas.

Greystar’s latest scheme is part of Student Roost’s expansion in undersupplied university cities. Birmingham is one of the UK’s tightest student housing markets.

Daniel Thompson, managing director of UK development at Greystar, said: “Selly Oak is a key location, and we’re investing in its long-term future through a mix of housing, public realm and essential services.”

McAleer & Rushe director Darragh Greenan said that the Triangle scheme would include more than 13,000 sq ft of resident amenities such as a cinema, gym, study areas and lounges.

It is targeting BREEAM ‘Very Good’ and EPC A ratings with green roofs, solar panels and sustainable materials.

McAleer & Rushe previously worked with Greystar on the Canvas Wembley student scheme, due to open before the 2025/26 academic year.
